Words Used Well - No. 4: I Never Said That

Writers like to quote the classics and the famous. Often, though, through misinformation or poor research, they end up misquotingand sometimes misinforming. In some cases, they attribute a statement to someone who never made it. Because theyve heard the quotation misquoted so often, they dont bother checking the authenticity. Everyone pretty much knows by now that Marie Antoinette never said, Let them eat cake, even though she gets the blame. And Sherlock Holmes, in the books, never said, Elementary, my dear Watson. (But, then, he never smoked a calabash pipe, either.) Beatrice Hall, who wrote a biography of Voltaire admitted that he never said, I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it. He did say, Think for yourselves and let others enjoy the privilege to do so too, but that doesnt imply anything to die for.

In other instances, a common way to misquote is to attribute a statement to the author when it was something said by a character in a play, poem, or book. Famously, Shakespeare didnt say, First, lets kill all the lawyers. It was Dick the Butchers line in Henry VI, Part 2. Greta Garbos character in Grand Hotel said, I want to be alone, but Garbo never did. There are sources that quote her as saying, I want to be left alone, but theres a world of difference. [The line: We have ways of making men talk.] get cited all the time, but theyre close to the actual lines and dont change the intent of what was being said.

When the original intent is changed along with the words, it becomes a question of intellectual honesty. This is often what happens when writers quote the Bible without actually having read it. Money is not the root of all evil. [1 Tim. 6:10 For the love of money is the root of all evil.] And pride doesnt go before a fall. [Prov. 16: 18-19 Pride goeth before destruction and a haughty spirit before a fall.]. Sparing the rod has nothing to do with spoiling the child. [Prov. 13:24 He who spares the rod hates his son, but he who loves him is careful to discipline him.]

This kind of misquoting also happens often when historic sources or persons are used to shore up an argument. Does power corrupt as Lord Acton is quoted as saying? Not quite. [The line: Power tends to corrupt; absolute power corrupts absolutely. Great men are almost always bad men.] Marx wasnt really comparing religion to drugs, so he didnt call it the opiate of the masses. [The line: Religion is the sign of the oppressed creature, the heart of a heartless world and the soul of soulless conditions. It is the opium of the people.] This statement is a bit more subtle than the misquote and not as damning.

The Bard certainly gets his share of being misquoted. Juliet never asked about Romeos location. [The line: Romeo, Romeo, wherefore art thou Romeo?] In this usage, wherefore means why, and putting a comma before the last Romeo totally messes with what Shakespeare meant. All Hamlet said was that he was acquainted with Yorick but not how well. [The line: Alas poor Yorick! I knew him, Horatio.] And Macbeth didnt need a guide, so he didnt say, Lead on, Macduff. He wanted the fight to start [The line: Lay on, Macduff, and damned be he who first cries, Hold! Enough!]. Sometimes, the misquote seems a bit silly. Shakespeare never mentioned gilding a lily. [The line: To gild refined gold, to paint the lily.] Whats really accomplished by dropping the middle four words? In the same vein, theres Falstaffs actual line, The better part of valour is discretion, not Discretion is the better part of valour, and Gertrudes real words, The lady doth protest too much, methinks, being rendered, Methinks the lady doth protest too much. Why bother to rewrite Shakespeare if youre going to say the same thing?

So, why do writers do it? For political correctness as when Congreves Music has charms to soothe savage breast gets cleaned up to soothe the savage beast? Or could it simply be ignorance and indifference? I dont know, and I dont care. I do know, though, that if you want to be taken seriously as a writer, you need to check your sources and not rely on hearsayno matter how many times you hear someone say it. Who knows, we may discover some day that Nathan Hales last words were actually, I was misquoted.

Grilled Chicken Contains Cancer-Causing Agent

Grilled chicken from seven national restaurant chains contains a dangerous carcinogen called PhIP, prompting the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM) to file a lawsuit against the restaurants, the PCRM announced September 28.

The lawsuit was filed under California's Proposition 65 in The Superior Court of the State of California for the County of Los Angeles to compel McDonald's, Burger King, Chick-fil-A, Chili's, Applebee's, Outback Steakhouse, and TGI Friday's to warn unsuspecting consumers of the carcinogen. PhIP was found in every sample of grilled chicken from these restraurants.

"Grilled chicken can cause cancer, and consumers deserve to know that this supposedly healthy product is actually just as bad for them as high-fat fried chicken," says PCRM president Neal Barnard, M.D. "Even a grilled chicken salad increases the risk of breast cancer, prostate cancer, and other forms of this lethal disease."

2-amino-1methyk-6-phenylimidazo[4,5-b]pyridine (PhIP), along with three other heterocyclic amines (HCAs), known as 2-amino-3-methylimidazo[4,5-f] quinoline (IQ), 2-amino-3,4-dimethylimidazo[4,5-f] quinoline (MeIQ), and 2-amino-3,8-dimethylimidazo[4,5-f] quinoxaline (MeIQx) are listed by the National Toxicology Program in the Report on Carcinogen as reasonably anticipated to be a human carcinogen.

Heterocyclic amines (HCAs) including PhIP are formed by condensation of creatinine and amino acids in animal muscle during the cooking of meat. A high level of the cancer-causing agents can be formed in a cooking process at high temperature for a long time.

HCAs are readily absorbed and distributed in the body. They are metabolized by both phase I and phase II enzymes and become toxic forms, arylnitrenium ions, which ultimately bind to DNA, leading to HCA-induced DNA adducts.

PhIP and other HCAs are more toxic than commonly known carcinogens such as benzo-(a)-pyrene. Studies have already found that among others, intake of PhIP and other HCAs may increase risk of colon, breast and prostate cancer in humans, three most common cancers in the United States which are commonly associated with meat consumption.

To reduce HCAs in cooked meat, meat should be prepared under 392 F or 200 C. Direct heat should not be used to cook meat. Consumers may also use some spices to inhibit the formation of toxic forms of PhIP in the body. Garlic is one of known spices that counteract the cancer-causing effect of PhIP.

In a study presented at the annual meeting of American Association of Cancer Research held on Oct 31, 2005, Ronald D. Thomas, Ph.D. at Florida A&M University in Tallahassee and colleagues reported that garlic compound diallyl sulfide (DAS) antagonizes PhIP-induced alterations in the expression of phase I and phase II metabolizing enzymes in human breast epithelial cells.

"We treated human breast epithelial cells with equal amounts of PhIP and DAS separately, and the two together, for periods ranging from three to 24 hours," said Thomas. "PhIP induced expression of the cancer-causing enzyme at every stage, up to 40-fold, while DAS completely inhibited the PhIP enzyme from becoming carcinogenic."

Another way consumers may try to prevent PhIP-induced cancers is to avoid consumption of meat. Dr. T. Colin Campbell, a retired nutrition professor from Cornell University said in his book "China Study" that consumption of animal protein is linked with elevated activities of enzymes that convert many non-toxic chemicals such as aflatoxin into cancer-causing agents. Dr. Campbell and others have found meat consumption is linked with increased risk of many cancers.

7. Multipliable. Because a single USB port can accommodate up to 127 devices (including hubs), you can attach several non-USB devices without the need of expansion cards. This means that if you have numerous non-USB devices, all you need to do is to provide each with USB adapter and a hub to connect them to the source.

8. Simple installation. If you prefer to use an expansion card for your single device, you have to open up the computer casing in order for the expansion card to be installed on your motherboard. But that is not the end of it. You still have to turn on your computer to reboot it before the card will start working. With a USB adapter, all you have to do is to attach the connector of your non-USB device to the adapter, insert the adapter into the USB port of your computer and in no time, your device is working--even while your computer is turned on.

With all these advantages, would you still prefer using expansion cards for your non-USB devices? Definitely not! The availability of USB adapters has made connecting devices to your computer quicker, cheaper, and easier.

The Magic Mandolin Lesson

I recently got my youngest son a mandolin lesson. He has never played the mandolin before but I think he really liked the experience and we were both very excited about it. I should admit that I have always pushed him a little harder to play music. I didn't know if it would happen or not, though. The point is that the whole family plays. My wife is a fiddler, I play the accordion, and my older son plays harmonica and guitar, my daughter - the banjo. I figured if my son took a mandolin lesson he might like it and start practicing. That's how we could all make music together. But there was a time when my son was not willing to listen to me and he refused to have a mandolin lesson.

The one type of music he only liked was rock and roll. I like rock and I have played it in the past but it is by no means the type of music which could teach you how to play with soul. I grew up fiddling around with an electric guitar. I didn't care if I was good or bad at it; I only wanted to play a few chords loudly. It all comes down to ego and raucous noise. Mandolin teaches tenderness but my son didn't even want to hear about a guitar lesson, to say nothing of a mandolin lesson.

However, one night it all changed. My whole family got together. The oldest son is a good harmonica player and a nice guitarist as well but he is kind of shy to play with others. He is 16 and just got in love for the first time. I remember seeing him coming back from his first serious date with that girl. He was really happy and in a great mood. He suddenly picked up the harp and started to play a tune.

The rest of us joined him one by one and finally there were all of us playing together. It really worked; we had never played so well until that moment. Of course, my little son didn't play then. He was juts watching at us wide-eyed. The following day he wanted to give the mandolin lesson a try. I found a teacher for him but he was impatient to start the lesson immediately. As I can pick a little, I gave him his first mandolin lesson myself.

As you check your emails you hear back from a magazine publisher that has decided, at the very last moment, to use an article you sent weeks ago. They need you to provide a rewrite of the article focusing on a more narrowly defined idea and they need it tomorrow.

Then, you should only accept work that fits in a framework that allows you to maintain the highest level of Integrity.

Do not fall prey to the impulse to simply throw something together at the last minute in order to meet a deadline. This reflects poorly on your work ethic and may cause a client to reconsider who they use for future work.

Know your limits and be willing to say NO to work that may conflict with your ability to complete work on time. It may mean passing up something youd rather be doing, but by explaining your situation you may be surprised by an editor willing to work with you despite a deadline.

Remember, as a writer of faith we work for the Lord, not for men. Make sure Jesus can be pleased with your efforts.
